What is Hospice Simcoe?
Hospice Simcoe is a community based charitable organization, serving the City of Barrie, parts of Oro-Medonte, parts of Springwater, Innisfil and South Simcoe. We provide non-medical support to those facing a life-threatening illness and their loved ones. Our support continues during the bereavement period. We work co-operatively with physicians, palliative care teams, clergy, and all community health services.

What is Hospice Palliative Care?

Hospice Palliative care is about caring, not curing, and about living with dignity, in comfort until the end of life. It is the care that those living with a life threatening illness receive, that helps make a difficult life passage, a meaningful one. Hospice palliative care is aimed at the relief of suffering and at improving the quality of life for persons who are living with, or dealing with, a life-threatening illness. It includes pain and symptom management, social, psychological, emotional and spiritual support, and caregiver support.
Through hospice palliative care, support is also provided to those who are bereaved.

What can Hospice Simcoe do?

  • Provide in-home visiting and support
  • Assist in educating clients and their families as to the community services available
  • Encourage clients and their families to advocate for pain and symptom control and quality of life
  • Provide resources materials from our library
  • Provide referral services

When do I contact Hospice Simcoe?

Our support is available from the time of the initial diagnosis of the illness. For urgent situations, services can be provided on a short-term basis early in the illness. The support is for all adults or children diagnosed with illnesses which can include cancer, AIDS, or end-stage heart, lung, kidney or neurological disease. Anyone may call for information or assistance. There is NO FEE for this service.

What happens after the death of a loved one?
Bereavement support is available to anyone who has experienced the death of someone close to them.

Continuing support for clients and their families' play a major role in extending the length of time an ill person stays in their home, thus decreasing the amount of overall healthcare funding and services needed. The levels of stress to physicians, nurses and other members of the health care team is reduced along with the stress levels clients and their families. This saves in health care dollars, in time and in emotional stability.
